A Broken Spirit

A broken spirit may come from failure, a crisis experience, or great disappointment. A broken spirit is not always bad. It often takes a broken spirit before we are willing to get right with God. Every sin is rebellion against God's will and goodness. Eventually our sins break us. Sin's results are always tragic, always ending in broken lives.

A broken spirit is the first step in turning to God for restoration and renewal. We are awakened to a real need for change. God responds to a broken spirit with mercy and grace. People with a broken spirit are ready to do business with God. He is the only way forward. The choice is either hopelessness, or hope in God. Our prayer to God says, "The sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. A broken and repentant heart, you will not despise" (Psalm 51:17, NLT).

Look for others with a broken spirit. Share with them your hope in God. Discover if they are ready to receive God's mercy and grace. Offer to pray with them and for them. Encourage them that God wants to restore and renew them.

No case is hopeless with God. No one is beyond God's mercy with a broken spirit. Many times, we must wait until a broken spirit is obvious. Then, help from God will always come, when it is sought by a person with a broken spirit.
